I read about this when it happened. I was struck by how nearly perfect a circle it was. So do they know what caused it? Was it because of strip mining? was it a purely natural phenomenon?
it occurs naturally. these sinkholes are all around the area and can be found in different types of environments. under the sea, in a volcano, on the ground.
the blue hole in belice is a sinkhole.
a lot of them are made into places for swimming, i posted pictures of some in several of my "mexico" folders in fb. some are visually interesting. i dove dos ojos (cobalt blue fresh water) and it was a remarkable cave dive. you can google pics of all these btw.
i'll post up a picture of a sinkhole in a volcano i visited.
